Apnea treatments vary depending on numerous factors including one’s weight, nasal anatomy, sinus conditions, throat and tongue anatomy, and associated medical conditions. All of these factors are considered in making recommendations. Treatments may include CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) masks – a non surgical approach, or surgical intervention to open the airway.
Voice and Swallowing Disorders:
The upper aerodigestive tract (breathing, speaking and swallowing passageway) is a pathway utilized in coordinating the complex functions of breathing, speaking and swallowing. Only one of these functions can occur at any time, while the remaining two functions are temporarily inactive. This area is frequently evaluated with fiberoptic instrumentation in order to visualize this area, performed in the office under local anesthesia provided as a nasal spray. Disorders include evaluating and treating hoarseness or voice changes, laryngeal tumors both benign and malignant, acid reflux (laryngopharyngeal reflux), cough, post nasal drip, abnormal sensations in the throat, difficulty swallowing, choking spells, and throat pain.
