Hearing Aid Styles

Selecting the appropriate hearing aid is an important decision, and one that may seem overwhelming considering the many brands, features, options, styles and price points from which to choose.  Our audiologists provide comprehensive services to ensure your success with hearing aids.  At your initial appointment, we will evaluate your hearing and assess your individual communication and listening needs to determine if you are a candidate for hearing aids. You have the option of being evaluated by one of our ear physicians to rule out other causes of hearing loss such as excessive wax in the ear canal, middle ear fluid, infection, tumors etc.  Once you are medically cleared and deemed a good candidate for hearing aids, we will review a number of factors which will guide us in selecting the most appropriate hearing aids for you.  These factors include your lifestyle, your manual dexterity, any visual issues, your personal preferences, and budget.  Your hearing aids will be programmed on a computer by your audiologist and you will learn how to appropriately use and care for your hearing aids.

The selection process may feel overwhelming, however our experienced audiologists will help you find comfortable hearing aids that are well-suited for your hearing needs.  Selecting the most appropriate style for you is a function of several factors including the degree of your hearing loss, listening situations, lifestyle, your manual dexterity, cosmetic appearance and personal preferences.

Style

Hearing aids are available in several different styles, each of which is tailored to the user’s needs. The two basic styles are In The Ear (ITE) and Behind The Ear (BTE).

In-The-Ear (ITE)

ITE aids are custom made to incorporate all of their components so that the device fits entirely within the ear. They are available in a number of different sizes from a full shell to tiny in the canal models.

Behind-The-Ear (BTE)

BTE devices are generally contained in a housing that sits behind the ear and is held in place by a receiver or ear mold. These hearing aids are available in different sizes, colors and strengths to accommodate varying degrees of hearing loss.
