Doctor of Audiology

Dr. Candace Thorp, Au.D. received her Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from James Madison University in 2005, and received her Doctorate of Audiology in May 2009.  While at James Madison, she was named the Lion's Club Scholar awarded to an outstanding student for academic achievement in the areas of Electrophysiology and Tinnitus.  In addition to academic accolades, Dr. Thorp served as President and member of various committees within the Audiology Department and the university.  She served as the student chair of the Virginia Special Olympics Healthy Hearing Initiative conducted annually.  These local efforts lead to the foundation of ongoing research to ensure adequate screening and hearing healthcare to the intellectually disabled.  Dr. Thorp completed her dissertation titled "The Effects of Online Training on Otoscopic Judgement for Cerumen Removal" as a continuation of her prior research.

Dr. Thorp completed her clinical fellowship year incorporating private practice and hospital-facilitated care.  While at the University of Virginia, Dr. Thorp received special training in disorders of the vestibular system (dizziness and vertigo) and tinnitus (ringing in the ears).

Dr. Thorp has experience which encompasses all treatment modalities of tinnitus with a fundamental basis in counseling and patient education.  Tinnitus treatment modalities include: Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Neuromonics.

Neuromonics treatment utilizes a customized neural stimulus combined with specific music to interact, interrupt, and desensitize tinnitus disturbance for long-term benefit through an organized treatment plan.

Dr. Thorp joined Chevy Chase ENT & Audiology in 2009.  She is certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and is licensed in Maryland and Virginia.  She is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Audiology.
